Book Description
Written by Barbara L. Moulard, this book is an analytical and artistic approach to the ceramic art of the prehistoric southwest, presenting 130 fine works from one collection. Re-created through this art form are the cultural and mythological traditions and worldviews of the Hohokam, Mogollon and Pueblo (or Anasazi) societies, passed along from generation to generation for over 900 years. This book introduces fresh discussion and interpretation of prehistoric southwest ceramics, and new insight and appreciation for the artisans and societies that created them.
About the Author
Born and raised in the greater metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia, Barbara L. Moulard was first introduced to the discipline of art history at the University of Georgia, where she received her baccalaureate in Drawing and Painting. In 1976 she moved to Tempe, Arizona, to pursue a Master of Arts degree in Art History at Arizona State University. She had long been interested in the Indian cultures of the New World and thought that the Southwest would be an ideal place to study the history, arts, and traditions of their diverse societies. After she graduated in 1982, Twelvetrees Press published Within the Underworld Sky: Mimbres Ceramic Art in Context, a beautiful book based on the concepts in Barbaras masters thesisan iconological study of Mimbres ceramic art. This volume continues to be an important resource for both scholars and enthusiasts of prehistoric Southwest ceramic art.
